In normal years, our coaches take you to places to further your researches or learn more about your ancestors' way of life. Each year we visit major archives or historic attractions and museums. Whether a member or not, you are welcome to join us. We try to include as many Wiltshire-based people as possible and offer pick up points at Westbury, Devizes, Chippenham and Swindon.
I am sorry to say that we have decided to cancel our final trip this year - to The National Archives at Kew - which we had planned for Saturday 12 September 2020.
Although the National Archives re-opened on July 21, it is currently only open Tuesday to Friday, with limited pre-booking for one reading room, no computer facilities and no refreshments. The National Archives cannot guarantee when they might reopen on Saturdays; nor can we be certain, if they did, that those who wanted to research there would be able to book a place in the single Reading Room now available (probably fewer than 10% of their normal number of seats).
This uncertainty and the sensible restrictions our coach operator is applying has prompted our decision.
We very much regret that the Covid-19 outbreak has led to cancellation of all our trips this year. We still want to be able to offer trips in 2021, but we will need to see how things works out in the remainder of this year before we can reasonably suggest options and dates for next year.
Meanwhile, we hope you all keep well and perhaps develop your family history research from home. While National Archives has limited opening, it continues to offer free downloads of its digital records – see https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/news/digital-downloads/
